When to consult a professional during your remodel

imagesUnless you know how to remodel the rooms in your home, you might want to consider calling a professional. You can start the project of you get the right equipment and information about the project, but you could run into problems depending on what room you are remodeling.
Plumbing
This is a common problem in the bathroom and kitchen. If you plan to install new faucets and break a line under the sink, then you need to call a professional. Turn off the main water valve, and wait until the plumber arrives. If the break is not related to the faucet, then you can probably go ahead and install the faucet. The plumber can connect the line to the bottom of the faucet so that you have water again.Another common plumbing problem is brittle hoses. If you have moved into a home that has been empty for a long period of time, then the hoses can become cracked from an absence of water flowing through them. This can lead to a mess if you do not pay attention to the hoses before working in the room.

Electrical
Electricity is something you should not mess with unless you know what you are doing. You can get shocked, and it is possible to start a fire with wires that are not connected the right way. Before doing anything with electricity, turn off the main power at the fuse box. Try to wear thick gloves so that you don’t touch bare wires. If you replace the receptacles in the home or light switches, get the proper size for the fitting.

Time
Do you have the time to complete the job? If you work during the day, then the last thing you probably want to do is remodel a house when you get home. The weekend might be the only time you have to devote to the project, and this time could be tied up with other events with the family. Call a professional to help with the renovation. The person can go to the house during the day, and you can get a friend to stay in the house while the professional is there. Allowing someone to work in your home will get the job done quickly so that there are not rooms you can’t use. If you are remodeling the bathroom and there is only one bathroom in the home, then this would serve as a good reason to get the work done as soon as possible.

Amount of Work
Think about the remodeling project before you get started. Do you want to simply paint the cabinets and put down a new floor, or do you want to replace the cabinets, get new appliances and install new counters? The amount of work involved in the project should be considered before taking on the job yourself. If you see that you can’t handle the job alone, then call in extra help. This is especially important if you are dealing with larger fixtures like a toilet or sink.

Why Contractors should keep work with the same electrician repeatedly

indexAs a contractor, you have a lot of freedom to set your own rules; however, you are also under a lot of stress to get the job done in a timely manner. Otherwise, you lose money. Being your own boss can sometimes come with trouble, and one of the best ways to avoid this is to have a great team working for you — specifically, as electrician. Working with electricity is a dangerous and time-consuming part of any building or repair project. When you hire an electrician, you want to be sure of what you are getting so you can have the confidence that unnecessary delays and accidents won’t happen. These four reasons should convince you to keep working with the same electrician:
Relationship — The most important part of a team is the relationship between everyone in the team. Building a good relationship with your electrician will save you time and keep the moral of your team positive and upbeat. If you don’t get long, the result is tension and each person’s job performance level will go down. When you keep working with the same electrician, you will develop a strong relationship, and in the long run, you will be adding a pillar of strength to your team.Confidence — As a contractor, there are times when you have to make a decision quickly. In order to do this, you really need to know exactly what your resources are. If you have to first think about searching for an electrician, not only will you delay the contract but you could end up losing it. When you stay with the same electrician, you know what you are getting, and this will give you the confidence you need to make quick decisions.Quality — When you sign a contract, you are promising your client of a certain level of work. It will be much easier for you to meet your commitment when you know the quality of the work you can get from your electrician. Working with the same electrician will allow you to know exactly what you are getting. Wiring may seem simple, but it is part of a large interdependent network. A capable and sharp electrician is essential for any project to go smoothly and for it to be finished with the quality you are aiming to provide.

Safety — A team that has a good relationship, reliable workers and provides quality work is the best way to ensure the safety of everyone working on the project. Safety in the work place is paramount as it will prevent accidents, lawsuits, and interruptions in the work.

Your trust in your workers will allow you to deliver the promised quality in a timely manner to your client, and this will be putting you in the best possible position to receive more contracts.

How to add Style to your Home with Lighting.

Now that the darker months are approaching, I’m sure lighting has been on your mind. Do you want to add a special touch to the outside of your house? Lights are a good way to add a little flair while offering a sense of security. There are several types of lights that you can get, and there are many occasions when you can use fun lighting ideas. lighting_01_1024Holidays
This is perhaps the best time to explore lighting outside the home. Many people might think that the only time to decorate is at Christmas. However, more people are decorating with Halloween lights and letting them flow to the Christmas holiday. Begin with orange or purple draped around the front porch. If you don’t have a porch, then add some lights to the windows. Get creative with the designs by making a spider web or ghost. There are also decorations for Halloween such as pumpkins and witches that have lights intertwined in them.Christmas is probably the most popular holiday for putting lights outside. You can use one color or the multicolored lights. If you live in a large neighborhood, then you might want to have your lights uniform with your neighbors so that your house doesn’t stand out. Like with the Halloween lights, place the string around the front porch or windows. You can add lights to trees and shrubs, and some people add them to birdbaths or dog houses.

Fountains
Whether you have a small fountain or a birdbath, you can make the water shimmer. Always remember to use caution when working with electricity and water. There are fountain lights that you can get at hardware stores that are specifically designed to be placed in water. Try to space these out to create a glowing effect. You can set the lights to come on with a timer, or you can manually turn them on when it gets dark. If you want to add lighting to a birdbath, then place them along the bottom edge.

Low Density
Sometimes, less is more. Invest in lights that have a low voltage. This will keep your electric bill down while giving a subtle brilliance along a sidewalk or bushes. Potential burglars are often put off by outdoor lights, so they act as a security system as well as a decoration. Make a plan before adding lights determine where you want to place them as well as what you want to use as a focal point. Do you want the lights to shine on the front of the house or garage, or do you simple want it to be easier to see where to walk when you come home after dark? One idea is to place lights near your house number. If there is ever an emergency, this will make it easier for responders to find you at night.

Style
If you want to do something that is suitable to your style, then add some color to your lights. You can put colored plastic over the lens, or you can also change the bulb in the light to a different color. Another idea is to set your lights to come on and go off at different intervals. There are many different styles of light fixtures that can add a decorative element to any  area of your home. No matter what style or ambiance you’re trying to achieve; making sure the job is done correctly and safely is always best for your home. Great Energy Efficient Light Fixtures for Busy Homes

energy-efficient-lightingIf you are like most people, then you are probably trying to save money any way you possibly can. One of the ways that you can lower your energy bill is to use energy efficient lighting in the home. There are several designs and styles, and you can put the lights in any room of the home or outside.

Lamps
A lamp is the most universal light you can find. In order to make them energy efficient, you need to use the right bulb. Try to place the lamp in an area of the room where there are no windows. You can use the natural light of the sun instead of the lamp. Don’t put lamps in a room that you don’t enter as much. Try to get a smaller lamp that requires a small bulb wattage. These are great for bedrooms and dens.
Under the Cabinet
These are the lights you would find in the kitchen. There are different lengths to choose from, and the fluorescent light can really save you money. Some of them provide almost 90 percent in energy savings. The lights are LEDs, and they are normally only 120 volts. Place the light under a cabinet that covers the most space. Don’t put it over a cabinet that only gets used once or twice a month just because you want it to look better. Utilize corner space. If you put the light in a corner, it can sometimes reflect off the walls, creating the appearance of more light in the area.

Battery Lights
This kind of lighting is probably the easiest way to save money and energy. Invest in a battery charger so that you don’t have to keep replacing the batteries in the light. These are ideal lights for a child’s bedroom or a bathroom. They can also be used on a bedroom nightstand so that you don’t have to leave a lamp on after going to sleep. Battery powered lights can also be used as display lights. Place them on the top of paintings and other items in the home that you want illuminated for others to see. You can turn them on if you are expecting company, or you can create a museum effect in the home.

Recessed Lighting
These are lights that are placed in the ceiling that don’t require a cover. Since they don’t need a cover, you can use a lower wattage and still have a bright light. Most of these lights use about 10 watts of energy. Use an LED bulb to further decrease the energy consumption. Some of these lights last 50,000 hours. The best thing about these lights is that you can use them in wet locations. This means they can be used in every room of the house as well as outside. Your pool area is a place where you can use the recessed lighting.

Whenever you plan to decrease energy usage with lighting, keep in mind that not using lights during the day or when no one is home is also helpful. For more information on making your home more efficient, contact Michael at PALMA Electric, LLC for a complementary quote!
